[INTERVIEW]Daesung’s Interview w/ Mini Magazine Japan

In Interviews on November 10, 2014 at 7:39 am

TOPIC 1 : MUSIC & LIVE

Q: Solo tour you held this year from June to August was very successful, bringing in more audiences that last year’s tour. I believe that the numbers of your fans are increasing. What were the differences between this year and last year’s tour?

DAESUNG: Last year’s tour was my very fist solo tour, so I had in mind to bring in more and more people inside my “world”. However for this year, the audiences who came were the ones who came to my last tour and already know my world, so I kept in mind that this tour is the moment that we ALL share and make. The fact that the venues were bigger this year than the last years’ showed that I was able to appeal to many people during last year’s shows.

Q: You probably had many difficulties?

DAESUNG: I didn’t have a lot of time to work on my album D’SLOVE, so I regret that I didn’t have enough time to promote it.

Q: I thought that your Japanese got better this year.

DAESUNG: People have told me that the MC part of my concert is very funny, and it was one of the most enjoyable moments for myself too. I’m so glad I got to talk about my thoughts and connect with the audience. I want to learn furthermore and know more of Japanese expressions.

Q: Do you still study Japanese these days?

DAESUNG: It’s already been 5 years since we made our debut in Japan, but when we go back to Korea, we still have a Japanese teacher that we learn from. I feel that I learned so much Japanese and got better at it during the solo activities. In BIGBANG, I am not the talkative one. I don’t even do SNS. I honestly don’t like talking about my thoughts. But when I do my solo activities, I have to talk about myself so I think I got better and better during D’SLOVE activities.

Q: You’ve gone to many parts of Japan; which food did you like?

DAESUNG: I love beef tongue so I ate a lot of them at Sendai (Sendai is famous for beef tongue). We got them in our catering and I was able to eat all of the good tongues during this tour (laughs)

TOPIC 2: NEW MINI ALBUM

Q: Nalbwa Gwisoon, which is the title song for new mini album DIRAITO, was originally written by G-DRAGON and the Japanese lyrics were written by HYADAIN. It is a special combination.

DAESUNG: I love trot and I’ve always wanted to sing them. The lyrics Hyadain wrote in Japanese are very very funny and I loved it so I decided I want him to write for DAEBAKIYA also.

Q: It is perfect for end-of-the-year parties. Do you have any advice for those people who want to sing it?

DAESUNG: I think you will be able to get the courage to sing it by drinking alcohol (laughs) There isn’t any party without alcohol right? Just grab one near you and you will be able to have the courage and sing it with your loud voice. So the secret is alcohol (laugh)

TOPIC 3: PERSON

Q: You’ve changed your hairstyle into a very adult-like style. Why is this?

DAESUNG: I don’t even know why but I think I did it for my solo activities. During D’slove tour, I kept thinking about myself and my music so I think my character became ‘darker/deeper’.

Q: “Darker/deeper” meaning you are calmer and became an adult?

DAESUNG: But I believe becoming an adult isn’t a good thing for a guy. I think that guys should not forget about its youthful soul. So I want to say that I still have a heart of a baby or an elementary school kid (laughs)

Q: But I think you are grown up.

DAESUNG: I am a grown up baby (laughs)

Q: What kind of moments do you feel you are grown up?

DAESUNG: I now have more responsibility towards work. When I’m doing solo, I carry all the responsibility right? But when something big happens during these activities, it effects not only me but all the people around me. When I think about these things, I feel that I’ve grown and I try to think more about these responsibilities now.

Q: What troubles did you have during solo activities?

DAESUNG: Everything is troublesome because I have to make the entire 2~3 hours of the concert. I keep worrying about how to make the enjoyable time with the staffs working with me. I think that the preparation before the tour is the most important. That way I can make the concert very enjoyable. The year I have solo tour is the most enjoyable year.

Q: Please give us a hint of how DOME TOUR will be like!

DAESUNG: Hint? Our strongest thing is the energy and the characters of each of us when we get together. It’s a secret but we may sing songs that the fans wanted to hear for a long time. Honestly, we are preparing for it right now and I have a headache. We can’t even gather as five frequently so we talk using chat room. We are currently discussing with Japanese staffs.

Q: Opening act would be IKON this year. WINNER already made a successful debut in Japan. Do you communicate with them? Who are you keeping an eye on?

DAESUNG: We don’t really have frequent chances to communicate, but we recently had a YG Family tour so I got to talk with them. I feel that I don’t need to give any advice to WINNER or Team B because they already have the outstanding skills. As for Team B, they are still trainees but each of them have their own character and they enjoy the stage; I have no worries. WINNER is really good too. I keep an eye on JINWOO. Because I want to experience his face (laughs) If you have that kind of handsome face, you don’t need to work so hard on things. But he is such a hard worker. I’m always fascinated. He is a good guy and I want to give him more advice. By the way I am joking about his looks (that I want to experience it) (laughs)

Q: Final words to the readers?

DAESUNG: Have you been preparing for parties? You have to prepare your stomach too. We are preparing for the fun dome tour so please come see us. Nalbwa Gwisoon is perfect for end-of-the-year season so please sing and dance to it.

Q & A

Q: What did you buy recently?

DAESUNG: Smoked chicken breast. I bought 10 of them yesterday. You can get them at SEIYU(grocery store). It is very good. I recommend. SEIYU sells smoked chicken breast! We are selling dome tour tickets! YAY! …I feel like I’m doing my job now. I feel so grown (laughs)

Q: Japanese word you learned recently?

DAESUNG: ROUNYAKUNANYO (trans: men and women of all ages). I want men and women of all ages to enjoy Nalbwa Gwisoon! I’m doing promotions again. This is a great interview (haha) Q: What kinds of little behavior/gestures of a girl that you’ve fallen for?

DAESUNG: My heart is on stop now so I don’t know (laughs) hmmm.. smile?

Q: What do you do during spare time?

DAESUNG: I went to hot springs all by myself. Without managers/staffs. I even asked a random lady to take a picture at the station.

Q: No one noticed you?

DAESUNG: There weren’t many people in the first place. Not even on the bullet train. I didn’t meet anyone at the inn so I was able to relax. I enjoy being alone because I get excited like a little kid.

Q: What food do you like recently?

DAESUNG: Konnyaku. Japanese convenience stores started selling ODEN. In Korea, we have oden that we must microwave but it is way better system in Japan. I buy all the konnaku at the store.

Q: Which member do you frequently contact?

DAESUNG: We have a chat room so I talk with everyone.

Q: Do you talk about dome tour?

DAESUNG: No. We only talk about the tour for like, 1-2 minutes. Five of us are ‘pros’ so we only talk about those important things quickly and get done with the conversation. Then we talk about things that aren’t really important. Like, Where are you? I’m here. Where are you? (laughs)

————————————————————————————————————————

Q: Concept mini album “Diraito” was fun to listen. How did you think of this concept?

D: During D-LITE DLive 2014 in Japan D’SLOVE Tour, I sang Furui Nikki (Old Diary originally by Akiko Wada) and Japanese version of Nalbwa Gwisoon which I received a great reaction, and I personally had so much fun singing them. It’s almost the end-of-the-year party season so I thought it would be a great idea to make an album that people can sing at karaoke and have fun. My music video shows the fun choreography so I want people to sing and dance at parties.

Q: So the “fun project in fall” you mentioned during the tour was about this.

D: Yes it was. Nalbwa Gwisoon and Daebakiya were the two trot songs that were perfect for the concept of the album and I wanted to put additional 2~3 songs.  I sang Furui Nikki during the tour so I decided to include that, then I chose Dounimo Tomaranai which I listened to when I was searching for songs.

Q: Nalbwa Gwisoon was translated by Kenichi Maeyamada (a.k.a Hyadain). The lyrics are very unique.

D: I’m very thankful because Hyadain is the only one who can express like this.  The original Korean version was full of humor.  I kept worrying “What will happen when this gets translated?”, but I was relieved when I saw his lyrics. So I decided to let him write Daebakiya too.  I tried rap in Kansai (Western Japan) dialect for the first time.  I never even talk in that dialect so it was difficult, but Hyadain made a guide vocal for me. I used that and listened to it so many times to practice. Recording took a while.

Q: Furui Nikki turned out to be a rock style that you like?

D: Yes. I really like rock, and also the original song sounded rock-ish to me.  That’s why I wanted to make it rock style. I thought it would suit my character.

Q: Not only the HA! shout but also different kinds of fake-souds were included. Were you able to add them naturally?

D: No. I record them beforehand. We make different kinds of fakes and try them during recording. Then I receive opinions from staffs and choose the good ones.

Q:  You prepare carefully.

D: Yes. By the way, I heard that Akiko Wada (original singer of Furui Nikki) played my version of Furui Nikki in her radio show yesterday.  I was so scared (laugh)

Q: That is nerve-wracking (laugh)

D: I really wanted to know her reaction…. Staffs told me she happily said “I’m very thankful~” and I was relieved! Because the most important thing for me is that I want the original singer to enjoy listening to my version and not to lose the original appeals.

Q: Did you know Dounimo Tomaranai by Linda Yamamoto from before?

D: No. I found out about this song while I was trying to find songs for this album.  I thought I wanted to sing it right away the moment I saw the performance by Yamamoto.  Its “power” was great and it was a little different from Akiko Wada’s power. The concept of the arrangement was “marching.” I had this image in my head of people singing it and marching forward, so I arranged it with that style.  I put in the part in the interlude where people can sing along, because it felt like many people would be able to sing it together.  I thought it would be a great idea.  Then I actually made it in and it suited perfectly than I was expecting.  I listen to it when I go running and it gives me power.

Q:  Singing these old songs is a chance for young generation to listen to it for the first time. How do you feel about that?

D: Isn’t it great?  I wasn’t even born in the 70’s when these songs were made.  I know that many people already know these songs because they are famous, but there will be young people who would listen to it for the first time.  I want for those people to listen to the original songs.  I really want to tell them that they are great songs.

Q: Not only as a singer but you also have so many ideas as a song arranger.

D: No, not really (laugh) I have to listen to soooo many songs, be concerned, think a lot, then finally get new ideas. I don’t know when those good ideas come so I keep thinking and thinking.

Q: About ideas. You planned the ideas for Nalbwa Gwisoon MV.  I laughed so hard; it was very comical!

D: Thank you (laughs) My ideas weren’t organized so I really want to thank the director who put them in order and made this MV.  I had an inspiration from this one commercial I saw a long time ago.  I’ve made so many MVs until now, but I feel disappointed when people don’t understand the concept of them.  Even though we put so many messages into it, people don’t understand it watching them only once.  So this time, I didn’t really think of the overall flow but simply tried to express the lyrics.  I wanted to make the MV like a commercial; just showing funny short scenes for 5~10 seconds that anyone can laugh at.

Q: I think you successfully managed it (laughs) Which idea do you have the most confidence?

D: I personally felt confident in that scene where I break the crackers. But I wanted to express that scene more clearly.  When I watched the MV, I thought the funniest scene was that part with G-DRAGON.

Q: Did you personally ask him to appear?

D: No. I felt bad to ask him so I couldn’t.  But G-DRAGON said that he will be in Japan when I was filming the MV and wants to be in it. It was nice of him to say that so I really wanted him to give him a handsome character and a great scene for him.

Q: You are so nice! That scene was funny but you probably felt sad…

D: Yes. I had no confidence after shooting that part (laughs) I just had to forget all my handsome side in this project. I named this album “diraito” in hiragana (simplest Japanese character) so people can feel closer to me.

Q:  You wanted to have the comical role so the fans can enjoy?

D: That’s right. I feel that I have to when I have to.  I didn’t want to worry about my past impressions on people. When I have to be funny, I would change myself 100% completely, then I go back to the past image.  That way, I think fans will enjoy it more and they will be able to look forward to my next album.

Q: I see. By the way do you have end-of-the-year parties in Korea?

D: End-of-the-year party is also popular in Korean culture; people in our Ent do it too.  We have been busy these recent years but until 3~4 years ago we had them every year.

Q: So do you guys drink and talk about how the year was?

D: In Korea, we don’t talk.  Only drinking (laughs).  We just say “Good job~! Now let’s drink!”

Q: Do you have any party plans this year?

D: No~. Wait! There is a party that would be great.  BIGBANG Dome Tour would be the great end-of-the-year party!

Q: BIGBANG Best Album will be released soon .

D: There will be 50 songs included in that album so you will be able to know everything about Bigbang.  Please look forward to the new concept pictures.

Q: How did you feel looking at the list of 50 songs? Was it long or short?

D: The time felt so short.  We debut in 2006 in Korea and it would be our 10th year in two years.  I could never imagine BIGBANG will have its 10th anniversary.

Q: So you thought BIGBANG wouldn’t last that long when you debuted?

D: I just didn’t have the time to imagine about our future. We were so busy every day…

Q: You are probably still busy these days, but you are successfully building up on your career and doing well on both solo and group activities.  What are your goals now?

D: The difficult topic that BIGBANG have on our minds now is “What and How are we going to remain?” We must make better things and we must achieve higher goals. This idea is making us difficult to make an album and the process is becoming time consuming.  Also the fact that so many people listen to our music now compared to when we debut is making us take our time to make new music.  But we all have in mind that we want to make music that people can listen to and feel fresh even after 10, 20 years.

Q: What comes in mind when you hear “autumn/fall”?

D: Fall is the season of “preparation”.  I love winter, so fall is the season to prepare to go skiing, hot springs, and parties.  I think everyone should listen to my mini album and get ready for parties (laughs)  I sing Nalbwa Gwisoon at parties.  We had an after-party after we performed for Incheon Asia Games.  We went to Karaoke and G-DRAGON put Nalbwa Gwisoon and called my name.  I had to ran to him; he handed me the mic and I sang.  I’m always prepared to sing it (laughs).

[INTERVIEW] DAESUNG’S INTERVIEW WITH RANKINGBOX JAPAN

In Interviews on November 4, 2014 at 8:43 am

BIGBANG’s D-LITE, a solo singer filled with plenty of poetic sentiments who has covered plenty of J-Pop songs is now venturing into the world of Trot! To raise the atmosphere at Japan’s year-end ceremonies and parties, this “special plan”, D-raito mini album will be on sale from 29th October! “Look At Me, Gwisun” which was composed by G-Dragon and translated by Kenichi Maeyamada to Japanese will be included in the mini album as well. “A Big Hit!”, “Old Diary” by Akiko Wada and “Donimo Tomaranai” by Linda Yamamoto can also be found in the mini-album and these songs will allow D-LITE to completely free himself and let his world explode! Let us listen to what he has to answer for some of the questions about his “album which was completed handsomely”.

If I sing this song in Korea, I will definitely become an instant celebrity and be very popular (laugh).

Q1: From the conception and creativity of your mini-album D-raito to all the works you have released before, D-raito is very different in terms of your singing style and also visually. This sudden change surprised me.
D-LITE: I have actually loved listening to Trot when I was young.

Q2: “Trot”, if I were to use Japanese to explain, is something like enka?
D-LITE: Enka is very similar to folk songs. In Korea, if the whole family were to gather for celebration, there will definitely be singing and dancing along to the national songs. I was determined to try out trot this time. As I have the confidence that I will be able to release a good album, I wanted to try and challenge myself to change my image completely (laugh). I feel like enjoying the process of it will make me look rather suave. Up till now even in Korea, there is no member in any male group who is singing trot seriously as a genre. I am not doing this work sloppily or just for fun. Thus, I feel like I have produced an awesome trot album.

Q3: You have always been involved in variety, won’t you be worried that the image of “D-LITE” that you have built before will be destroyed?
D-LITE: Although I am worried, but once I’ve decided to do it, I must have the confidence that I will do it well. If I do not have the confidence, I will not proceed on with it.

Q4: D-LITE-san in “Look At Me, Gwisun” has been completely released in all aspects.
D-LITE: Yes! In Korea, singing this song will make you a star and also very popular (laugh). The choreo at the chorus is also very easy, everyone must learn to be a singer who can sing and dance at the same time!

Q5: Speaking of movements, D-LITE’s “chest-dance” is also one of the selling points in this song.
D-LITE: The tip is to not use your leg, your abs nor your arms but only exerting strength on your chest and move it. I hereby invite the ladies to only use your chest to move too! (laugh).

Q6: Speaking of ladies, in “Look At Me, Gwisun”, there is a sentence that says “What should I wear to sleep tonight?”. What type of clothing does D-LITE san wants the ladies to wear to sleep?
D-LITE: Erm… Silk! I think the touch has to be dry and that’s good enough. Any design will do.

Q7: In the MV, we are able to see D-LITE wearing his pyjamas and turning into a baby. Which dress-up did you like best?
D-LITE: “Baby D-LITE”. Even I got a shock when I saw that image (laugh). “Ah~ I finally dressed up like this”.

Q8: G-Dragon has also appeared in this MV due to your friendship with each other. That handsome role, was it something you wanted to do?
D-LITE: Nope. Initially G-Dragon was given the role of being unpopular with the women. But he took time out of his busy schedule to appear in my MV so we gave him a handsome role.

Q9: Did G-Dragon say anything about the final product of the scene?
D-LITE: “Not bad” he said, then he laughed.

In a jigsaw puzzle, each piece is different, but when you piece them together, it becomes a piece of art. This is BIGBANG’s charm.

Q10: “A Big Hit!” contains some form of Japanese dialect in it, very interesting.
D-LITE: This is the first time I rapped using dialects. Although it is tough, I still found it interesting.

Q11: Apart from trot songs, you have also covered Akiko Wada’s “Old Diary” and Linda Yamamoto’s “Donimo Tomaranai” with your usual strong and powerful singing style. Is there any difference between the J-Pop songs you covered back in 2013 February’s release of “D’scover”?
D-LITE: The feeling is not the same when you listen to the music. For “D’scover”, I’ve sang the songs originally like how it used to be but with my own colors added in, which is unlike this time round, as I have to really change my style and tone and record specifically. So thus, it is very different based on this point alone.

Q12: So you were portraying an entirely different singing style and range that you’ve never did before up till now right?
D-LITE: Yes. Because I believe it is imperative to produce different sounds and range for different songs. Regardless of “Old Diary” or “Donimo Tomaranai”, the most important point is still “charm”. I have considered in many factors on how I can make my “charm” appear.

Q13: I believe you must have recorded this many times.
D-LITE: In reality, practicing of songs is not just by singing. The most important part is to think of the song’s impression it made on you after listening to the songs. There’s a saying in Korea, “Listen to it ten times, sing it once.” Thus, listening to it for many times then thinking about it is the key. As such, I am always listening to music, always thinking of what the song has left me and proceed with preparations after.

Q14: The piece of work that you created this time out of yourself and the D-LITE up till now, which is the real you?
D-LITE: Both are (laugh). If up till now, what I have always been showing you guys is my side on how I treat music seriously, then this time, it is like my childhood period where I show people the side of me singing songs happily.

Q15: I also particularly like your series of “To-san’s private lifestyle in Hokkaido” summer edition.
D-LITE: It is the same place as in winter. Firstly, we have increased more content as compared to before thus it was tough delegating work (laugh). We had to wake up at 3am to watch the sky and seas. When you guys watch the video, you will definitely feel that D-LITE has grown up in a different place. In this edition, there are also some scenes that cannot be done during winter. This is the evidence of growth.

Q16: After this, it is BIGBANG’s time. You are facing the upcoming 5 dome tour [BIGBANG JAPAN DOME TOUR IN 2014~2015 “X”] in Japan starting from November. Where do you think BIGBANG’s charm lies at?
D-LITE: Firstly, BIGBANG’s biggest advantage is that as we all have solo activities, each of us has strong individuality. It is so strong thus you see us all going solo, but if you stand from afar, you can see that all 5 of us are actually tied together. In a jigsaw puzzle, each piece is shaped differently. But when you place them together properly, it becomes a painting. This is BIGBANG’s charm.

Q17: So I see. In the upcoming dome tour, will there be a chance of us seeing D-LITE perform some of his solo works?
D-LITE: That is still a secret (laugh). We are still in the midst of discussion but rest assured that it will be an awesome concert. We’ve listened to songs we don’t really listen. We are thinking of bringing a different dance stage choreo as well all because we want to bring a different vibe to our audience that will differ from our previous dome tour. Please wait in anticipation.
